ImPulsTanz 2018: Choy Ka Fai – UnBearable Darkness
For him, Japanese butoh dance is “a rebellion against Western dance culture and a quest for a new choreographic language”. Choy Ka Fai is well-known in Vienna since his Soft Machine project in Weltmuseum at ImPulsTanz 2015. Now he evokes the spirit of the anarchist inventor of butoh, Tatsumi Hijikata, who died in 1986. In this “paranormal” performance featuring Hijikata as an apparition and fascinatingly eerie digital effects, Choi investigates the legacy of the “dance of darkness”, which emerged in the 1950s.
