THE SHOP ON MAIN STREET
The story takes place in a small town in Fascist Slovakia during WW2. The carpenter Tóno Brtko lives a poor life, until the authorities offer him to take over the Jewish widow Lautman's little shop for sewing material. The elderly woman is old and confused, she mistakes him for someone who is in need of employment and hires him. After a while, the odd couple begins to like one another. Tóno Brtko resists the authorities and decides to support the widow in maintaining her shop instead of taking it from her. After a while, the authorities determine that all Jews must leave the city. Tóno Brtko is now confronted with the difficult decision of how to proceed.
An Oscar awarded classic that is worth every minute of it’s time.
