ART AT THE CENTRE – A CENTRE FOR ART As a recently opened art and project space, the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich is characterised by its openness to experimentation and interdisciplinary projects. It is a space for artistic research as well as being a place of communication for professionals and art aficionados alike.
The official art space of Lower Austria at 13 Herrengasse in the middle of Vienna has been open admission free to visitors on five days a week since 2005. With attractive architecture and a floor area of 300 square metres in Palais Niederösterreich, the former Lower Austrian Government building, the Kunstraum provides facilities for the presentation of work by young Austrian and international artists. Here, they can show their work to the public without the pressure of having to meet sales targets or visitor quotas while still being at the centre of cultural life in the city.
PROGRAMME Entirely in-line with a broad understanding of art, the focus at the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich is on thematic group exhibitions. We show current and innovative tendencies in contemporary art. Exhibitions of work by artists are supplemented in successful combination with projects from the fields of architecture, design, literature, film and fashion.
THE H13 NIEDEROESTERREICH PREIS FÜR PERFORMANCE With the instigation of the H13 prize for performance, the Kunstraum has had a focus on the medium of performance since 2007. To promote and proliferate recent art beyond genres, an exceptional performance from Austria is awarded a prize and premiered every year.
NETWORKING IS OUR STRATEGY Intensive collaboration with international galleries, collections and patrons of the arts allows us to position the artists beyond the borders of Austria. Since 2006 we have completed cooperations with, among others, Prague/Czech Republic, Sibiu/Romania, Nanjing/China and Rotterdam/Netherlands. Internationally active curators are regularly invited to conceive exhibitions.
LIVING CULTURE Numerous symposiums, panel discussions, talks and lectures, film screenings and concerts accompany the programme. In an atmosphere that is both professional and intimate, young artists are invited to hold exchanges with their more famous colleagues as well as mentors from the fields of art and culture, commerce and the media. Culture is alive at the Kunstraum.
TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT With an excellent infrastructure and a flexible spatial situation the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich is ideally equipped for the logistics of providing a platform for art.
