Zoë Demoustier / Ultima Vez – Unfolding an Archive

© Tom Herbots
The daughter of a war photographer explores her father’s archive. Belgian photo artist Daniel Demoustier has filmed conflicts and disasters in around 100 countries including Afghanistan, Lebanon, Haiti, Liberia and Syria. But the son of a dancer has also worked with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Wim Vandekeybus and Milo Rau, and all three of his children are involved in dance. In this piece, dancer Zoë Demoustier moves through the atrocious world full of violence as captured for the media by her father. In the process, she takes the impressions that the father’s job has left in the relationship with the now grown-up child as a starting point for an artistic reappraisal. In Unfolding an Archive, dance, acting and sound document the traces of working with the archive records, while the brutality of the images remains in the background.
