The ImPulsTanz audience may still remember Tiran Willemse from Trajal Harrell’s celebrated Maggie the Cat at Akademietheater. He now engages in his very own aesthetic in blackmilk (melancholia), the first part of the trompoppies (Afrikaans for drum majorettes in uniform) trilogy. With great sound, disturbing theatrical effects and dance that oscillates between virtuosity and despair, the South African artist explores the dissimilarities between African and African-American male identity, opening a new door in the process: to black male melancholia.
