Belvedere 21 will devote a major exhibition in spring 2026 to the work of American painter Sue Williams (*1954, Chicago Heights, Illinois), offering a sweeping look at her career since the late 1980s. Known for tackling themes of power, oppression, gender, and body politics, Williams has consistently pursued a critical-feminist perspective in her paintings and drawings.

What makes her work particularly striking is how she operates within a field long dominated by patriarchal assumptions. Across a wide array of painterly strategies, Williams challenges conventions, transforming familiar forms and imagery into incisive critiques of social and political hierarchies. This exhibition highlights that rigor and creativity, showing how she has reshaped both subject and medium throughout her career.
