John Brown stands at the reception desk and demands a room. An emergency, he says. Though there is nothing physically wrong with him—John Brown is in perfect health—he urgently needs a place to stay, he explains. A place of structured routines and quiet order, where "time passes and leads to nothing," because John has decided to put himself into care and stop participating.

The hospital staff is bewildered and searches for a plausible explanation for this strange patient’s motives. Is he a malingerer? An eccentric millionaire? A criminal on the run? A psychopath? Or even a terrorist?

Tom Stoppard’s play A Separate Peace has lost none of its relevance nearly 60 years after its first broadcast on the BBC in 1966. In a world on the brink of burnout, the acclaimed British playwright with Jewish roots strikes a nerve in a society caught in escalating crises and mounting catastrophes, longing for nothing more than a moment of peace amid the daily struggle for security, stability, and self-optimization.
