"Art? What would I be without it? I don’t know. But I dread – I see what without it hundreds and thousands are!" (Ludwig van Beethoven)

"One often forgets that even if art is a very successful field in contemporary culture, there are still a lot of people alienated by it. Even if people don’t fully understand where my work is coming from, at least there’s somebody who looks kind of sane standing in front of you and politely engaging with you. People react." (Tino Sehgal)

"BEETHOVEN MOVES" is a journey. An art journey from Beethoven’s contemporaries to positions of the 21st century. And it culminates in an encounter ... with one of the aforementioned, allegedly sane people. And from this arises the invitation to witness the transformation of music into sensuality: to experience one’s own enthusiasm for Beethoven’s music in a physically translated form within the framework of "This joy". During the last year, Tino Sehgal and nine interprets devoted themselves to six music pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven – in this preview of the work they will present their vocal and dance interpretations for the first time.

The works of the internationally renowned and multiple award-winning artist Tino Sehgal are constructed situations that initiate encounters. At the invitation of the Kunsthistorische Museum Vienna, the artist together with nine interpreters started to work on This joy as a part of the exhibition "BEETHOVEN MOVES". In cooperation with ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Festival, a preview of Sehgal’s new work can now be experienced. This is a continuation of ImPulsTanz’ relationship with the artist, who in 2016 was danceWEB mentor and curator of the groundbreaking workshop series visual Arts x dance with more than 40 artistic pairings of artists, curators and directors from the fields of visual arts and dance. In addition, two of his important dance-oriented works, "Kiss" and "Yet Untitled" (Golden Lion Venice, 2013), as well as his first work in the field of visual arts, "Instead of allowing some thing to rise up to your face dancing bruce and dan and other things", were presented by ImPulsTanz at the Leopold Museum.

Dancers: Alexandre Achour, Moss Beynon Juckes, Margherita D’Adamo, Sandhya Daemgen, Hanako Hayakawa, Leah Katz , Justin F. Kennedy, Vera Pulido, Lizzie Sells.

This joy takes place within the exhibition "BEETHOVEN MOVES" at Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, which includes works by Rebecca Horn, Auguste Rodin, Francisco de Goya, Jorinde Voigt, Anselm Kiefer, Ayse Erkmen and others.
