He was a hero for many generations: Tarzan, the man with the yell, created by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs. A scion of an English aristocratic couple, the fictional character was raised by apes in the African jungle. The first Tarzan story was published in a pulp magazine in 1912. Now, the radical Viennese performance collective God’s Entertainment, which specialises in political weak points in our society, is taking this rather ambivalent character to task. What does the dominant male type swinging from hanging vines and personifying the criticism of modern civilisation actually represent in today’s nature/culture discourse?
