Dance at the edge of time
“Alles Walzer?” When “Vienna dances”, who dances with whom and how? A best of Johann Strauss in contemporary composer Wolfgang Mitterer's arrangement (with its premiere on 27 January 2025 together with Klangforum Wien at Wiener Konzerthaus) is the starting point for a dance piece in which six dancers, together with Eva-Maria Schaller and Wolfgang Mitterer himself on stage, immerse themselves in a cheerful apocalypse.
Strauss is Pop, but at the same time the absurdly intoxicating waltzes, polkas and mazurkas scratch the surface of a bourgeois society whose motto to this day is: “Happy is he who forgets ...” And so the question of possible voices beyond the gallop and waltz dream also arises: when the world is already stumbling and stumbling, Johann Strauss s followed by the war opponent and peace activist Bertha von Suttner. The salon closes with a bang - but its doors are to be reopened. To this day, Karl Kraus remains right: “The senselessness taken seriously on stage is entirely in keeping with the outlook on life of a society that has come to its senses in its old age and thereby exposed its imbecility.”
