12. August 1945 – the war has ended. The idyllic life of a small Hungarian village is suddenly disturbed by the arrival of two Jewish men who have returned from the concentration camps. The entire population, among them the authoritative mayor Szentes, is now afraid these two survivors might reclaim their stolen possessions and, furthermore, confronted with the guilt and shame that has been buried and silenced since the Jewish population’s deportation. Ferenc Török’s black-and-white film is not only a cinematic masterpiece, but also a critical examination on Hungary’s post-war society.
