Who is this fabulous figure, this shapeshifting visitor from a long-gone yet never entirely forgotten world? Maybe it’s the spirit of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, who turned into a woman overnight, that is dancing and singing here. Dressed in exquisite costumes, François Chaignaud from France creates a fairy tale-like atmosphere in this solo, against the backdrop of a romantic “natural landscape” of embroidered, tapestry-like paintings. And he demonstrates his mastery as a dancer, singer and travesty artist. As a queer-poetic figure in constant metamorphosis he dances and plays La Doncella Guerrera, a girl going to war, as intensely as Saint Michael or Tarara, an Andalusian woman subjected to the pain of love. The music accompanying these “uncertain romances” – Spanish melodies from the 16th and 17th centuries – is conjured live on stage by four musicians playing a finely tuned combination of instruments including the bandoneon, harmonica and viola da gamba.
