The German contribution to this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale addressed the impact of the refugee situation. But you don’t have to go to Venice to experience it: A database at www.makingheimat.de shows buildings for refugee accommodation and presents eight principles for a successful “arrival city”. But how to go on after this? Germany has a housing crisis, hundreds of thousands of homes are needed. What are the concepts needed to overcome this challenge? Is this the “hour of the architects”? Or just a gleeful occasion for the construction industry?
