CEU, the Central European University founded in Budapest in 1991, has become a global symbol for the struggle for academic freedom. In the face of relentless attacks by Viktor Orbán, it has defended the academy’s liberal values, standing as a beacon of resistance against the Hungarian government’s professed illiberalism. CEU’s President Michael Ignatieff reports on the situation in Budapest and the institution’s decision, announced in spring of 2018, to create a campus in Vienna. The conversation will be moderated by journalist Eric Frey of Austria’s Der Standard.
