We cordially invite you to the opening of the artist Ashley Hans Scheirl’s first solo exhibition at our Vienna gallery, located at Getreidemarkt 14 in 1010 Vienna. For her show entitled "Neoliberal Surrealist" the artist will install new paintings and sculptures to transform the gallery into a dreamscape melding sexuality and desire, economy and greed.

Body parts, pictograms, and comic-elements form an undefined world in Ashley Hans Scheirl’s paintings. The artist uses taboo objects to create critical yet humorous stagings that group together status symbols such as cars, clothing, and luxury items. Visions and perversions, innocent wishes, forbidden appetites, and insane delusions are unabashedly revealed.

The scenographic staging of the images, which detach themselves from the white cube’s surface and expand into the space, creates a kind of film set or stage on which an absurd, at times obscene, but always enigmatic play enfolds.

Ashley Hans Scheirl was born in Salzburg in 1956. She participated in the documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens in 2017 and has been a professor for contextual painting at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna since 2006. Her works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, the Kunsthaus Bregenz, and the Salzburger Kunstverein.
